One year into President Trump’s second term, the assault on press freedom in the United States has reached a level that press freedom organizations say puts America on track to join the ranks of the world’s worst press freedom violators.
Voice of America Silenced
On March 14, President Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the parent organization of Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe. Just one day later, all VOA personnel were placed on administrative leave, effectively shutting down news production at one of the world’s most important international news services.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemned the decision as ‘the latest abandonment of America’s historic role in championing press freedom.’ Ironically, Congress had just included funding for USAGM in the 2026 budget bill, signaling bipartisan support for international journalism. The executive order directly contradicts this legislative intent.
FBI Raids Washington Post Journalist
On March 15, the FBI conducted a raid on the home of Hannah Nathanson, a Washington Post journalist, seizing her personal and work devices. RSF has called on Congress to hold hearings on the raid, describing it as a dangerous escalation in the government’s war on the press.
The raid has sent shockwaves through the journalism community. Legal experts warn that seizing a journalist’s devices not only threatens their work but also puts confidential sources at risk, potentially silencing future whistleblowers.
A Year of Escalating Repression
RSF has published a detailed timeline documenting Trump’s attacks on press freedom since returning to office. The pattern is clear: from verbal attacks on reporters, to revoking press credentials, to now physically raiding journalists’ homes and shutting down federal media outlets, each step has been more aggressive than the last.
The detention of journalist Estefany Rodriguez by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) adds another layer to the crisis. RSF has demanded her immediate release, arguing that her detention is directly linked to her journalism.
What This Means for Democracy
“A free press is not a luxury but a fundamental pillar of democracy. When a government silences its own public broadcasters and raids the homes of journalists, it is not protecting national security. It is dismantling the very system of accountability that keeps democracy alive.”
These developments should alarm not just Americans but people everywhere who value democratic governance. The United States has long been seen as a defender of press freedom worldwide. If that reputation is destroyed, the consequences will be felt globally, emboldening authoritarian leaders who have long used the excuse of ‘national security’ to silence critical voices.
