Taliban Restrictions on Women: A Comprehensive Legal Analysis

Taliban Restrictions on Women: A Comprehensive Legal Analysis

Last updated:

Since August 2021 the Taliban have issued more than eighty edicts restricting what women in Afghanistan may study, where they may work and whether they may leave home alone. This analysis consolidates them, with focus on Q2 2026 developments, September 2024 Vice and Virtue Law implementation, late 2024 medical training ban, and the gender apartheid framework. It complements our earlier Taliban women article with fresh emphasis on the codification pattern.[1]

UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett, UN CEDAW Committee, and academic advocates (Karima Bennoune) characterise Taliban treatment of women as gender apartheid — a specific international crime designation being advocated internationally.
