The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has expressed outrage at a dramatic surge in deadly drone attacks targeting civilians in Sudan. Since March 4, more than 200 people have been killed in the Kordofan and White Nile regions, marking one of the deadliest periods for civilians since the conflict began.
A Systematic Pattern of Violence
The attacks are not random. According to the OHCHR, the drone strikes have targeted populated areas where civilians live and work. Markets, residential neighborhoods, and displacement camps have all been hit. The scale and frequency of the attacks suggest a deliberate strategy that shows complete disregard for civilian life.
A Forgotten Crisis
Sudan's civil war, which erupted in April 2023, has displaced millions of people and created one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters. Yet it receives a fraction of the international attention given to other conflicts. With the world's eyes focused on the Iran war, there is a real danger that the suffering in Sudan will be even further marginalized.
What Needs to Happen
International observers are calling for an immediate investigation into the drone strikes, the identification of those responsible, and accountability through international justice mechanisms. The flow of weapons and drone technology into Sudan must also be addressed, as the increasing use of drones represents a dangerous escalation in the conflict.
"The people of Sudan deserve the same attention and outrage that we give to other conflicts. Over 200 civilians killed by drones in two weeks is not a statistic. It is a catastrophe that demands an immediate response from the international community."
