Five years after the military coup, Myanmar remains in a state of crisis. UN News reports that the country is at a critical juncture, with civilians bearing the heaviest burden of ongoing conflict between the military junta and resistance forces.
The Human Cost
The military junta continues to carry out airstrikes, arbitrary detentions, and systematic human rights violations against its own population. Millions have been displaced internally, and humanitarian access remains severely restricted. The recent earthquake has added a natural disaster to an already catastrophic humanitarian situation.
A Test of International Will
The international community's response to Myanmar has been widely criticized as inadequate. While diplomatic statements are issued regularly, meaningful action to protect civilians has been limited. The combination of political complexity and donor fatigue has left Myanmar's people increasingly alone in their struggle.
The people of Myanmar are not asking for charity. They are asking for the world to uphold the principles it claims to believe in. Protection of civilians, accountability for atrocities, and support for democratic governance are not optional. They are obligations.
