Amnesty International welcomed the release of investigative journalist and Temirov LIVE editor-in-chief Makhabat Tazhibek-kyzy from custody in Kyrgyzstan on March 23, 2026, but immediately called on Kyrgyzstani authorities to drop all remaining charges against her and lift the travel ban imposed as a condition of her release. A court ordered her freed pending a retrial — a step Amnesty describes as "long-overdue" but insufficient to remedy the violations she has already suffered.
Who Is Makhabat Tazhibek-kyzy?
Makhabat Tazhibek-kyzy is the editor-in-chief of Temirov LIVE, a Kyrgyz investigative media outlet that has published reporting on corruption, illicit enrichment, and abuse of power among the country's political and business elite. The outlet's work has provoked repeated official harassment. Tazhibek-kyzy was detained as part of what Amnesty International characterises as a pattern of retaliatory prosecutions targeting Temirov LIVE journalists. Her detention separated her from her son and subjected her to conditions Amnesty has described as incompatible with her rights.
While Makhabat Tazhibek-kyzy's release from prison is a long-overdue step towards justice that allows her to reunite with her son, it does not erase the human rights violations she has already endured and those she faces with possible retrial. The Kyrgyzstani authorities should immediately drop all charges and lift the travel ban.

A Pattern of Targeting Independent Journalism
The case of Tazhibek-kyzy is not isolated. Amnesty International has documented a broader campaign by Kyrgyzstani authorities against independent journalists, particularly those affiliated with Temirov LIVE and similar investigative outlets. The targeting of journalists through criminal prosecution, travel bans, asset freezes, and detention is part of a regional trend in Central Asia in which governments use legal mechanisms to silence reporting on corruption and political misconduct.
What Must Happen Next
Amnesty is calling on Kyrgyzstan to provide Tazhibek-kyzy with an effective remedy for all violations she has suffered, drop all charges, lift the travel ban, and guarantee that journalists can operate freely without fear of reprisal. The organisation also calls for a broader review of cases against Temirov LIVE journalists to ensure that none remain subject to politically motivated prosecution.
