Country Expert — Human Rights, Political Situation & Asylum Cases

Expert at The Human Rights Experts, an international expert witness organisation.
We provide expert witness reports for asylum cases worldwide, covering human rights violations, political persecution, and systemic oppression. Our reports are trusted by lawyers, courts, and immigration authorities, in full compliance with procedural standards and tribunal requirements in the UK (CPR Part 35, Upper Tribunal PD, First-tier Tribunal IAC PD), USA (Federal Rules of Evidence), Canada, and the EU.
I provide expert analysis on all five Refugee Convention grounds — political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality — with a focus on the following countries:
Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe's ruling party maintains its grip on power through a combination of security force loyalty, patronage networks, and the systematic suppression of political opposition through violence, abduction, and the weaponization of the legal system. Opposition members, trade unionists, and civil society activists are subjected to abduction and torture by state agents, often during pre-dawn raids, and face prosecution under vaguely worded public order and security legislation. The legacy of the Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland during the 1980s remains an unresolved source of Ndebele community grievance, with survivors denied justice and the government resisting accountability measures. White commercial farmers and farm workers experienced large-scale displacement during the land reform programme, and political violence around the land issue continues. Women face domestic violence, child marriage in rural areas, and property-grabbing by in-laws upon a husband's death. Same-sex conduct is criminalized, and LGBT individuals face prosecution, police abuse, and pervasive societal hostility driven by both political rhetoric and conservative religious movements.
Zambia: Zambia has experienced fluctuations in its democratic governance, with concerns about the use of state institutions to target political opponents through selective prosecution, asset seizure, and the harassment of independent media outlets. The copper-mining regions face environmental and labour rights concerns, with communities displaced by mining operations and workers subjected to unsafe conditions. Ethnic dynamics, while less volatile than in some neighbouring states, occasionally surface in political discourse and competition for state employment. Women face high rates of gender-based violence, with one in three experiencing physical violence from a partner, and cultural practices including sexual cleansing and early marriage persist in parts of the country. Same-sex conduct is criminalized with up to fifteen years' imprisonment, and while prosecutions are infrequent, LGBT individuals face social ostracism, blackmail, and the constant threat of criminal sanction.
Malawi: Malawi's democratic institutions, while generally regarded as functional, are strained by poverty, corruption, and the politicization of the judiciary and civil service. Opposition politicians and activists face periodic harassment, and protests over governance failures have been met with disproportionate police force, including the use of live ammunition. Albino individuals in Malawi face a unique and extreme form of persecution: ritual killings and the trafficking of body parts driven by superstitious beliefs, with security forces proving unable or unwilling to provide adequate protection. Women and girls experience widespread gender-based violence, child marriage, and sexual exploitation linked to initiation camps in southern districts. Same-sex conduct is criminalized with up to fourteen years' imprisonment, and LGBT individuals face arrest, social rejection, and violence, with political leaders using anti-LGBT rhetoric to mobilize conservative constituencies.
