Country Expert — Human Rights, Political Situation & Asylum Cases
Country Expert — Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador: Human Rights, Political Situation & Asylum Cases
Expert at The Human Rights Experts, an international expert witness organisation.
We provide expert witness reports for asylum cases worldwide, covering human rights violations, political persecution, and systemic oppression. Our reports are trusted by lawyers, courts, and immigration authorities, in full compliance with procedural standards and tribunal requirements in the UK (CPR Part 35, Upper Tribunal PD, First-tier Tribunal IAC PD), USA (Federal Rules of Evidence), Canada, and the EU.
I provide expert analysis on all five Refugee Convention grounds — political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality — with a focus on the following countries:
Venezuela: Venezuela is gripped by a prolonged political and humanitarian crisis under authoritarian governance, characterised by the systematic persecution of political opposition members, journalists, and civil society activists through arbitrary detention, torture, and enforced disappearances carried out by state security forces and colectivos. Religious groups operating independently of state oversight face surveillance and operational restrictions, while ethnic minorities, including indigenous Warao and Pemon communities, suffer forced displacement and environmental devastation linked to illegal mining in the Orinoco Belt. Gender-based violence is endemic with virtually no state accountability, and LGBT individuals face widespread discrimination, hate crimes, and exclusion from employment and housing, compounded by the collapse of health services essential for transgender individuals.
Colombia: Colombia remains affected by the legacies of its decades-long armed conflict, with continued violence perpetrated by dissident FARC factions, ELN guerrillas, paramilitary successor groups, and drug trafficking organisations operating in rural and border regions. Political persecution manifests through the targeted assassination and intimidation of social leaders, human rights defenders, and former combatants participating in reintegration processes. Indigenous Wayuu, Embera, and Afro-Colombian communities face forced displacement, land dispossession, and confinement by armed groups. Gender-based violence, including conflict-related sexual violence, remains pervasive. LGBT individuals in conflict-affected areas face heightened vulnerability to violence from armed actors enforcing conservative social codes.
Peru: Peru is marked by recurring political instability and a pattern of state violence against social protest movements, with security forces documented using lethal force against demonstrators, particularly in Andean and southern highland regions. Indigenous Quechua and Aymara populations face systemic discrimination, economic marginalisation, and criminalisation of their land rights activism, while Amazonian communities confront illegal extractive activities encroaching on their territories. Religious minorities outside mainstream Catholicism encounter social resistance in rural areas. Gender-based violence affects indigenous women at disproportionate rates, with extremely limited access to justice. LGBT individuals lack comprehensive anti-discrimination protections and face violence, particularly in highland provinces.
Ecuador: Ecuador faces a rapidly deteriorating security environment driven by the penetration of transnational criminal organisations into coastal cities and border regions, resulting in unprecedented homicide rates, extortion, and forced recruitment by gangs. State responses have included emergency measures involving documented excessive force, arbitrary detention, and militarisation of civilian areas. Indigenous nationalities, including Kichwa and Shuar communities, face threats from oil and mining extraction projects on their ancestral territories, with environmental defenders targeted for intimidation and prosecution. Gender-based violence is widespread, with femicide rates rising. LGBT individuals face discrimination and hate crimes, particularly transgender women in urban areas who are targeted by both criminal groups and security forces.
