Expert at The Human Rights Experts, an international expert witness organisation.
We provide expert witness reports for asylum cases worldwide, covering human rights violations, political persecution, and systemic oppression. Our reports are trusted by lawyers, courts, and immigration authorities, in full compliance with procedural standards and tribunal requirements in the UK (CPR Part 35, Upper Tribunal PD, First-tier Tribunal IAC PD), USA (Federal Rules of Evidence), Canada, and the EU.
I provide expert analysis on all five Refugee Convention grounds — political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality — with a focus on the following countries:
Nigeria: Nigeria faces a convergence of security crises across multiple regions: the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province insurgency in the northeast continues to produce mass displacement, abductions, and attacks on civilian infrastructure, while herder-farmer violence in the Middle Belt has escalated into a devastating pattern of communal massacres affecting Tiv, Jukun, Berom, and Fulani communities. In the southeast, the emergence of separatist movements advocating for Biafra has provoked a heavy-handed military response including extrajudicial killings, mass arrests, and the systematic targeting of young Igbo men at checkpoints. Nigeria's dual legal system, combining secular federal law with Sharia criminal codes in twelve northern states, produces sharply divergent experiences of religious freedom, with Christians and heterodox Muslim groups facing restrictions in Sharia-governed areas, and accusations of blasphemy or apostasy carrying severe penalties. Women across Nigeria endure widespread domestic violence, trafficking for sexual exploitation along internal and international routes, and harmful traditional practices including female genital mutilation and forced marriage, with enforcement of protective legislation severely inconsistent between states. The Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act of 2014 criminalizes same-sex relationships, public displays of affection, and the registration of LGBT organizations, with penalties of up to fourteen years' imprisonment, and in northern states, Sharia courts may impose the death penalty by stoning for same-sex conduct.
Ghana: Ghana is generally regarded as one of West Africa's more stable democracies, yet significant human rights concerns persist, including police brutality, prolonged pre-trial detention in overcrowded prisons, and vigilante justice. Ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, particularly in the Northern, Upper East, and Upper West regions, produce periodic outbreaks of violence and displacement, and individuals accused of witchcraft — predominantly elderly women — face banishment to so-called "witch camps" where they live in conditions of deprivation and social exclusion. Women face domestic violence and marital rape, which is not adequately addressed by existing legislation, and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation persist in the Upper East and Upper West regions. Ghana's parliament has advanced legislation that would further criminalize LGBT identity and advocacy, and even under existing laws, LGBT individuals face police harassment, community violence, family rejection, and the use of colonial-era criminal provisions to prosecute same-sex conduct.
