Country Expert — Mexico: Human Rights, Political Situation & Asylum Cases
Expert at The Human Rights Experts, an international expert witness organisation.
We provide expert witness reports for asylum cases worldwide, covering human rights violations, political persecution, and systemic oppression. Our reports are trusted by lawyers, courts, and immigration authorities, in full compliance with procedural standards and tribunal requirements in the UK (CPR Part 35, Upper Tribunal PD, First-tier Tribunal IAC PD), USA (Federal Rules of Evidence), Canada, and the EU.
I provide expert analysis on all five Refugee Convention grounds — political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality — with a focus on the following country:
Mexico: Mexico faces a profound and multidimensional human rights crisis driven by the convergence of organised crime, state complicity, and structural impunity. The country records over 30,000 homicides annually and more than 100,000 officially recognised enforced disappearances, making it one of the most dangerous countries in the world for civilians, journalists, and human rights defenders. Cartels including Sinaloa, CJNG, and Gulf exert territorial control over vast regions, imposing systems of extortion, forced labour, sexual exploitation, and recruitment that amount to a parallel governance structure. Journalists investigating crime and corruption face assassination, with Mexico consistently ranked as the deadliest country for the press outside active war zones. Indigenous Nahua, Raramuri, and Mixtec communities face land dispossession by both criminal organisations and extractive industries, with environmental defenders disproportionately targeted for assassination. Migrants transiting Mexico from Central America face systematic kidnapping, extortion, trafficking, and sexual violence by both criminal groups and corrupt officials. Gender-based violence and femicide are endemic, with ten women and girls murdered daily and conviction rates below 5 percent. LGBT individuals, particularly transgender women, face alarming rates of hate-motivated violence, and state-level protections vary dramatically across the 32 federal entities. Religious leaders and communities opposing cartel activity in their territories face retaliation, including forced displacement and murder.
