A joint investigation by Bellingcat and The Sunday Times has uncovered connections between former UFC fighter Mounir Lazzez, the notorious Kinahan drug cartel, and companies involved in transporting Iranian oil in violation of international sanctions.
The Connection
According to the investigation, Lazzez served as a director of companies that purchased oil tankers later sanctioned for helping the Iranian regime circumvent international restrictions on its oil exports. The same companies have been linked to the Kinahan cartel, one of the world's most powerful organized crime networks.
Why It Matters
This investigation highlights the complex web of connections between organized crime, sanctions evasion, and geopolitical conflict. The ability of criminal networks to help sanctioned regimes access global markets undermines the entire system of international sanctions, which is one of the few non-military tools available to hold abusive governments accountable.
With the Iran war intensifying, the enforcement of sanctions is more important than ever. If companies linked to drug cartels can freely help Iran sell its oil, the economic pressure meant to constrain the regime becomes meaningless.
Sanctions only work if they are enforced. Investigations like this one are essential for exposing the networks that help authoritarian regimes and criminal organizations profit from conflict and suffering.
