Bangladesh is entering a new political era, and two major international organizations are calling for immediate action on human rights. Human Rights Watch is urging the new government to make rights a priority, while Amnesty International has revealed that Meta's content moderation failures are contributing to real-world violence in the country.
A Chance for Change
HRW has published a detailed call to the new Bangladeshi government, urging it to break with the patterns of repression that have characterized previous administrations. The organization highlights the need for reform in areas including extrajudicial killings by security forces, enforced disappearances, restrictions on free speech, and labor rights violations.
Meta's Dangerous Failures
Amnesty International's investigation has found that Meta's delays in moderating content on Facebook and Instagram in Bangladesh are directly fueling violence. Hate speech, incitement, and misinformation spread unchecked on the platforms, with moderation responses coming too late to prevent harm.
This is not the first time Meta has been linked to violence in South Asia. The company faced similar criticism over its role in the 2017 Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. Amnesty's findings suggest that Meta has failed to learn from past mistakes and continues to prioritize profit over the safety of its users in the Global South.
The Path Forward
"Bangladesh's new government has a historic opportunity to chart a different course. But meaningful change requires more than promises. It requires concrete action on human rights, accountability for past abuses, and a commitment to protecting free expression both online and offline."
